Monday, so Tam & Rog had to go to work, whereas Shannon and I got to go into London to explore. We started with the Tower of London. We saw the crown jewels and a few ravens. The story about the two princes who disappeared was also interesting. We got into a chat with a Beefeater who had been to Canada a number of times. Apparently their sister regiment is based in London, ON. After the tower, we walked over to the Tower Bridge.
We took the tour (self-guided) and walked across the top walkways. The view on either side is very good. The design of the bridge is quite brilliant. It was designed to allow ships to pass by without disrupting foot traffic. This is achieved by having the traffic platform open up and out of the way for ships while having a pedestrian bridge above the top of the lifted road sections.
After looking at the engine room of the bridge, we walked along the Thames and across London Bridge to go to the Monument. The Monument commemorates the great fire of London. Then we walked to St Paul's cathedral. It is very large and impressive, especially the dome. Both the Duke of Welington and Lord Nelson are entombed here. Next we walked across the Millennium Bridge to see Shakespeare's Globe theatre. T'was not to be. It was closed and from the outside looks like a replica of a victorian theatre.
We then walked over to Westminster to see parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. We arrived in time to see (hear) Big Ben chime off 6 o'clock. WE walked around parliament, but Westminster Abbey was closed so we returned home for the traditional Monday night roast.
