This morning we drove to Harlech castle, perched high on a cliff above the ocean. The ocean has since been pushed back to reveal a golf course, but the castle on the cliff is still impressive. next we drove to Blaemar Ffestiniog, the slate capital of the UK. The town is surrounded by Snowdonia park, but is not actually part of the park. Perhaps the giant slag heaps have something to do with that.
Next we stopped at Dolwyddelan castle which is more of a ruin on a hill behind a farm house. On the way to our next destination, we found a beautiful old rustic pub [#17] in the middle of nowhere. The inside was furnished with all the old antiquey stuff like copper kettles and horse bells. It would be the perfect place to curl up for the day with a book and a pint.
After a fantastic meal, we headed for Rhug church. It is a very small but beautifully decorated old parish church. Then we headed to Crewe to drop Tam and Rog off for their train back to London and we drove to Manchester to drop off the car and catch a train to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Upon arrival we were tired so we checked into the second hotel we saw and went to bed. Of course we stepped out to a pub [#18] for a nightcap first.
