UK Trip - Day 6 - England

The washing machine repairman isn't available until Friday, so I left with no clothes. The plan is for Tam & Rog to deliver them when we meet in Wales on Friday night. I am wearing my one t-shirt, my one pair of socks, my one pair of jocks and Shannon's pants.

Today we started using our Brit Rail passes. We took the train to Winchester to see the cathedral. The cathedral was grand and expansive and would have been nice except for the jarring imposition of some modern art works at various spots around the church. The juxtaposition was disturbing and not in a way that made you think about anything other than a suitable punishment for whom- ever's idea it was. For instance, a wonderful example of a Norman crypt for Duke so and so was right beside a pile of multi-coloured plastic that looked like somebody had melted soda bottles over a wire frame. Judging from overheard conversations, I don't think my opinion was in the minority.

Next, after a pub stop [#8] of course, we took the train to Salisbury, where we found rooms over a pub and went to explore another cathedral. By this point, I am pretty much all churched out, but this one holds a copy of the Magna Carta. The calligraphy is excellent and the copy is very well preserved.

As we were walking around the town, we stopped at a pub [#9] to rest up before dinner. For dinner we went to another pub (called the Haunch of Venison) [#10] and had a fantastic meal. Then we headed back to our pub [#11] and had a few drinks and really enjoyed chatting with the locals. I got asked how American beer compares to English beer and got an apology for thinking I am an American and I also got to use my sex in a canoe joke, which went over quite well.
