This morning we rented a car to drive to drive to Stonehenge and Avebury. We got a silver Vauxhall. Our first stop was Stonehenge. We'd heard that it wasn't very exciting and that your couldn't go near the stones, but we both found it very interesting. the amount of effort that it must have taken to build it was awesome. The audio tour explained the sight very well.
After Stonehenge, we went on a cross country adventure to find a recommended pub, the George and Dragon [#12], where we had a fantastic lunch. Next we drove to Avebury to see the giant ring of stones. The Avebury ring is much larger than at Stonehenge, but unlike Stonehenge, the rocks are just stuck into the ground and not connected to each other. The stones have not been shaped or carved at all. It is a giant ring of large irregularly shaped stones stuck into ground. The current town is superimposed on the ring and of course the pub is at the centre of the "henge". Most of the area where the stones are still standing are sheep paddocks. I'm not sure if Shannon enjoyed the stones or the sheep more.
After the obligatory pint at the pub [#13] we screamed back to Salisbury and only made our train because it was running late. It was only a two car train and we were packed in like sardines all the way to Newport. The only reason we were in Newport was because we were given bad train advice and missed numerous earlier transfer points. The train to Chester was less crowded and we got seats after a couple of stops. At the Chester station, before we met Tam & Rog, I was in the loo and I saw a lad urinating and sending a text message on his mobile at the same time. Doing his business while doing his business I guess.
Once we met Tam & Rog and got settled into our hotel, we went out for a quiet drink. The pub [#14] however, had other ideas. We were subjected to Saturday night karaoke.
